Do you use a rubber dam when removing mercury amalgam fillings? This doesn’t stop mercury vapour but does prevent you swallowing pieces of amalgam as it is removed.

Are fillings quartered into large pieces to remove? This is the accepted method, as it doesn’t generate all the mercury vapour that drilling out the whole filling does.

Do you have water filters on each water syringe and handpiece? They may even have a “closed system” in which only bottles of sterile water are used.

Are you a latex-free office?

Yes. We are aware that many people have allergic reactions to latex gloves and cleaning cups and hence we have alternatives.

Do you work with other health practitioners who can help me prepare for amalgam removal and help with chelation of the heavy metals afterwards?

Is your office metal-free?

We do use crowns that have a metal alloy base with porcelain baked on top. Some partials and dentures may have a metal frame. For the discerning patient, we have products such as Zirconium which is a transitional metal yet extremely biocompatible.

Why does biological dentists prefer a metal free approach?

It is widely known that heavy metals can affect our immune system, blocking the body’s regulatory functions with an inflammatory process. Mercury containing amalgam fillings was the mainstay of conventional dentistry as we have known it since almost a century ago. Gold being an ideal restorative material is inert and unfortunately very expensive. Hence amalgam became a far much more attractive option for the masses. We know that mercury is absorbed by the body and hence over a period of time, there will be an uptake of heavy metal toxicity.

Are there other choices apart from titanium for implants ?

We have seen that matured zirconium implants combine both the advantage of bony healing of titanium implants and the biocompatibility, natural aesthetics and reduction in plaque deposits. Whilst the track record of zirconium implants have many years ahead to out prove the test of time that titanium implants already have, it is clear from the outset of the discovery of zirconia fusing to bone – how valuable this discovery is and how it has revolutionised Dental Implantology.

What is Biological Dentistry?

It is the belief and practice of both combining modern dental techniques with the principles of biological medicine.

To summarise:

Your biological dentist will analyse every single aspect of your body function in detail. This will allow specific treatment objectives to be custom formulated as each individual is very different. Principally we strive towards reducing the heavy metals potentially remaining in your body – hence the avoidance of a toxic level.

We take the 6 monthly appointments very seriously as they will allow us to detect dental decay early. As part of biological dentistry, we are not particularly fond of root canal treatment, hence our focus on prevention and early intervention is very high.

Ozone remains a keystone practice of ours in both removing and treating infection. In particular we utilise Platelet Rich Plasma and Platelet Rich Fibrin (taken from your own blood) to accelerate healing.

We are fond of using a pulsating magnetic field to strengthen each patient’s endogenous healing abilities.

You should bring as much information to us as possible about your current or any past medical, surgical, immunological and drug history. All recent blood tests and X-rays should be emailed to us prior to your visit.
